Nights at the Museum

Mystery, Murder and Mischief

Overnight Adventures for Grades 3-6

It's a spooky night at the museum when kids relive the murder trial of the "Witch of Staten Island." It all happens in the very courtroom she was tried in during the 19th century.

The drama starts at 7:00 p.m. when the kids make their own candles to illuminate the approaching darkness. They trek through the dusk to the Guyon-Lake-Tysen House where they gather around the fiery hearth to pop their own corn and churn butter. Next, they climb the Courthouse steps to uncover the "back story" of one of the most sensational murder trials in American history.

Upstairs, in the same courtroom where Polly Bodine was tried for murder in 1843 they cuddle in their sleeping bags, munch popcorn and participate in the dramatic re-telling of Polly's mysterious and bizarre trial. The story ends when they render their own verdict and discover what the real jury decided more than 150 years ago.

As darkness wraps the Courthouse, the lights are turned low and the children fall sleep in the shadow of the witness stand where the "Witch of Staten Island" testified.

After a long night of rest in peace, they shake the sleep from their bones and head down to the Guyon-Lake-Tysen House to griddle their own Indian Flappers (corn meal pancakes), join a scavenger hunt and other activities. Finally, they are initiated into the "Society of the Secret Treasures" and are sworn as "Keepers of Treasure" to cherish and pass on secrets to new members.

By 11:30 a.m. they are ready to return to the present day.
