SIHS Technology Committee Member

Andrew Schmitt is an information technology professional with a deep interest in history.  Andrew, whose roots reach back to the 1850s in Staten Island, has been a volunteer at Historic Richmond Town since 1984.

When he was only 12 years old, Andrew was a participant in the apprentice program, working in several trades such as printing, harnessmaking, and carpentry.  Andrew later worked as the Job Printer, progressing from journeyman to master craftsman over a period of several years.

Andrew has volunteered at many major events over the years including Richmond County Fair, Old Home Day, Revolutionary War and Civil War weekends, and Traditional Dinners.

Andrew has given his time in a variety of ways – from operating the printing press in the Job Print Shop to helping with technology needs such as designing the Richmond Town video cover.

Andrew has served as the Richmond Town webmaster since 1997, launching 3 major versions of the site since then, with the most recent one in 2009.

Andrew was awarded two service awards from the Staten Island Historical Society:

  • Raymond C. Fingado Award for outstanding service in administration, November 2004.
  • Vernon B. Hampton Award for outstanding service in education, November 1997.

Andrew works in Manhattan as an IT professional.  He continues to donate his time and resources to make the Society a better place to visit - on site and on the web. Recently, he was named to the Staten Island Historical Society's Directors' Council.
