This image was recently re-discovered in our archives when our curators were working on the Herbert Flamm photograph collection.

The photograph, one of a set of five, was taken on November 30, 1954 by Herbert Flamm, a well-known local photographer who was often commissioned to photograph streets and buildings for insurance companies.

This was a special Do You Know for our friends across the pond. Among the more than 7,000 images in Historic Richmond Town’s Alice Austen Photograph Collection are hundreds of photos taken by Alice while traveling in Europe. In 1903, Alice visited England and photographed many wonderful sights along the way, but we do not know the locations of the buildings and towns that appear in her England photos.

The image is from Staten Island, New York, and dates back to 1950. As you can see from the photograph, Joe's Clam House sold seafood and groceries, and he also sold R&H Beer, which was brewed right here on Staten Island. If you look closely at the display windows, you can see that he's selling potatoes at the price of 49 cents for 5 pounds. The photo was taken by Herbert Flamm, a well-known local photographer who was often commissioned to photograph stores, restaurants, factories, and other businesses.

This image was recently re-discovered in our collection among the works of Herbert Flamm, a well-known local photographer. The teenage boys and girls are dressed in cheerleading uniforms, and the “ND” logo on their sweaters tells us that they attended New Dorp High School. The photo is not dated, but the style of the uniforms, complete with saddle shoes, suggests a date in the 1940s or 1950s.

These never-before-published photos were recently re-discovered in our archives while our curators were working on the Herbert Flamm Collection of photographic images.  Mr. Flamm took these photographs in 1949, but his notes didn't tell us where the houses were located.
