On the Town

Tour America's Historic Town

November - December

April – June

Experience the sights, sounds, and smells of New York City's past.

  • Historic buildings, furnished interiors
  • Self-guided format
  • Museum teachers dressed for eras 1690's – 1890's
  • Hands-on activities
  • Available 10:00 a.m. - 12:45 p.m., Monday – Friday; on selected days afternoon tours are available for groups
  • July – August on selected days self-guided tours are available for groups


Historical Museum Building # 23

  • Explore the exhibit Bringing Up Baby to discover how families raised children before electricity.
  • See what industry was like before conveyor belts; see what farming looked like before tractors.

Voorlezer’s House Building #2

  • Compare a school from 1690 with schools of today. 

Basket Maker’s House Building # 13

  • Feel the weight of workbaskets made at a colonial farmhouse; see how they’re made.
  • Stop by the pond to see turtles basking; check for migrating geese

Guyon-Lake-Tysen House Building # 14

  • Follow the aroma of savory vegetables pan-roasting to a kitchen; inventory the pantry for cooking tools.

Grocery Store Building # 19

  • See what shopping was like before shopping carts and cars.
  • Take a photo of yourself “wearing” clothes from the 1800s.

Tinsmith’s Shop Building # 22

  • Hear the tinsmith’s hammer shaping metal into useful household objects.


Colonial Focus Tour

What was life like before electricity, trade routes that included airplanes and goods manufactured mostly by machines? Visit farmhouses and commercial spaces to find out.


African-American Focus Tour

What jobs and skills did African Americans have in the 1700s and 1800s? How did enslaved people live and work in New York in the 1700s? Find answers to these and other questions in this tour through the Historical Museum, farmhouses and more.


Acting as a Citizen Focus Tour

From 1690 – 1960 the relationship between government and the people went through many changes. Visit a courtroom from the 1830s, a schoolhouse from 1690 and more to make the changes real for your students.

Charlie Sullivan to portray legendary American politician James Guyon Jr. at upcoming Guyon Tavern Concert Series

CharlesSullivan 120x150Charles Sullivan is no stranger to acting. This time traveling performer has appeared on stages across Staten Island, most recently as Scrooge with Shakespeare Theatre, as well as with Sea View Playwright’s Theatre, Sundog Theatre, and In the Wings.

This season, he portrays James Guyon Jr., the historic proprietor of Historic Richmond Town’s Guyon Inn and Store. Home to the legendary Guyon Concerts, the circa 1819 building serves up an authentic 19th century acoustic music experience with a warm and resonant sound quality illuminated by candlelight and warmed by a potbelly stove.

Jan 5, 2018 - The Guyon Tavern (circa 1819) at Historic Richmond Town (HRT) serves up an authentic 19th century acoustic music experience with a warm and resonant sound quality that is rarely found anymore, thanks to the original aged wood and plaster, and the unmistakable handmade construction.

Online tickets are available up until 3pm, two weekdays before the event. For  Saturday and Sunday events, tickets are available online until 3 pm Thursday.
