Telling Digital Stories

HRT Logo FilmstripHistoric Richmond Town shares the American experience in many ways, including film and video. Over the past few years, we have become our own film production company.   We produces documentaries, short films, promotional videos and even commercials that share the stories of our diverse  American Life.  Digital storytelling is a wonderful way to reach people of all ages and backgrounds - especially when they can't visit us in person.  Film is one area - our online collections database, online publications are some others. We are excited to be part of the emerging wave of digital humanities.

Forever Changed: Carrying the Pain of 9/11

Forever Changed: Carrying the Pain of 9/11 is a collaborative film project between Historic Richmond Town, the Office of the SI Borough President and local visual artist and photographer, Vinnie Amessé.  The documentary marked the ten year anniversary of the tragedy. Amessé wanted to share the experiences of a small group of people who lost loved ones or survived the tragic event but have never told their stories publicly.

The power of love is so strong.  Bonds that were severed viciously by the tragedy still live on inside.
As filming started and the victims began to open up for the first time, it became clear that these friends, neighbors and members of our community were still carrying a numbing pain ten years later.

Amessé decided to capture this heartache through interviews and still photos.  It became apparent that for these victims this one terrible day lived on, very deep inside, while those of us who were less affected  found ways to move on.

SI Scenery Preview

Staten Island Scenery is a new large format book published by Historic Richmond Town in collaboration with the Staten Island Museum.  This work is a definitive look at the borough of parks and how its beauty has helped define New York City. The documentary that accompanies the publication is a behind-the-scenes look at how a selection of  images were created, preserved and presented in the book. Narrated by Historic Richmond Town's Director Emeritus and author of Staten Island Scenery, Barnett Shepherd, the film is an enjoyable half hour excursion into the woods, fields and hills of Richmond. The clip shown here is a short preview of the full film.

Tourist in Your Own Town

This wonderful video was not produced by Historic Richmond Town but by our good friends at the Landmarks Conservancy.  The Conservancy, chaired by Peg Breen, does amazing work on behalf of landmarked historic buildings.  This video is one of a number the Conservancy has made available on the web.  We recommend the entire series.

Through Kids' Eyes

Through Kids' Eyes is a new pilot program at Historic Richmond Town that immerses middle schoolers into history.  We worked with Lavelle Prep 7th graders and their teachers to run the first program.  This short video shows how we did it.  The program has expanded to phase two in 2014.

Peek at Tavern Concerts

This is a little peek at one of our Tavern Concerts.  The Tavern is a building lit by candlelight, without running water or electricity.  It's heated by a single wood stove.  But the room is warm with music that is enveloped in amazing aged acoustics.  There is no venue quite like it in NYC. Check out the video.

Skip the leftovers and enjoy open-hearth fire-cooked Thanksgiving samplings

Thanksgiving TableThe meal that many American families enjoy on Thanksgiving has deep roots in the earliest American food traditions. Historic Richmond Town’s three historic kitchens will be crackling with hardwood fires and open-hearth cooking on Saturday November 25 and Sunday November 26. Historic Interpreters will serve food samples that feature original old-world recipes that include food items that the colonists learned about from Native American culture, and then infused with the spices used in Europe.
