Native Plant Meadow

Ethnoecology–the knowledge of how humans understand, use, and care for the natural world–was already being practiced on Staten Island long before science gave it a name. This knowledge lives in observing seasons, knowing which plants nourish or heal, and sharing stories about the land. It reminds us that landscapes are shaped not only by nature, but by human life, memory, and culture.

This meadow was started in 2022 and open in 2026 as part of that story. It reflects centuries of interaction between people and plants, Indigenous stewardship, farming, scientific study, and conservation. The plants here are not just specimens; they are witnesses to human history, to resilience and renewal, and to the enduring bond between people and place.
