Join us for a dynamic panel discussion celebrating the book launch of Too Good to Get Married: The Life and Photographs of Miss Alice Austen, the highly anticipated new book by author and historian Bonnie Yochelson, wrote in collaboration with Historic Richmond Town.

The conversation will feature Bonnie Yochelson alongside Victoria Munro, Executive Director of the Alice Austen House, and Gabriella Leone, Curator at Historic Richmond Town. Together, they will explore Alice Austen’s multifaceted life.

Too Good to Get Married offers a fresh and deeply researched look at Austen’s iconic photographs, her satirizing of gender norms, and her remarkable impact on both American photography and queer history. This richly illustrated book brings Austen’s vibrant world — from yacht races and tennis matches to Manhattan’s bustling streets vividly to life.

About the Book:

Alice Austen (1866–1952) lived at Clear Comfort, her grandparents' Victorian cottage on Staten Island, now a National Historic Landmark. A pioneering photographer from her teenage years, Austen captured the spirit of the Gilded Age and challenged the social conventions of her time. Too Good to Get Married marks the first major book on Austen in nearly fifty years, illuminating her extraordinary life and influence on photography, gender norms, and LGBTQ+ history.
