New Exhibition: German Heritage on Staten Island

Historic Richmond Town has installed a new exhibition just in time for Rolling Thunder and the Staten Island Rotary’s Oktoberfest event on October 12th celebrating German Heritage on Staten Island.

The photographs in this exhibition offer a small sampling of the cultural heritage of Staten Island’s German community. While the members of that community are perhaps most famous for establishing successful local breweries and introducing New Yorkers to lager beer, their culture also added flavor to the food, music, and social life of the Island.

During the second half of the 1800s, more than two million German-born immigrants came to the United States. Some of these new arrivals settled on Staten Island, largely concentrated in the Stapleton neighborhood. As they became part of the local community, they shared their cultural traditions with other Staten Islanders.
